🩹 First Aid Recertification: What’s Required & When to Renew

Whether you’re managing safety at a workplace, pool, school, or camp, staying current with your Lifesaving Society certifications ensures you're both compliant and ready to respond. Lifesaving Society Ontario is a leading authority for first aid training across the province, and their certifications are widely recognized by employers and regulatory bodies like WSIB.

This guide outlines what’s required for Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, and CPR recertifications — including how long they’re valid and when you’ll need to renew.

📅 Certification Validity Periods

  • Emergency First Aid (EFA) – Valid for 24 months
    Includes CPR-B

  • Standard First Aid (SFA) – Valid for 36 months
    May include CPR-C or CPR-HCP

  • CPR (A, B, C, HCP) – Valid for 24 months (when taken on its own)

🔁 Recertification Guidelines

✅ Emergency First Aid (EFA)

  • Can be recertified even after expiry

  • Participants may take the full EFA course again at any time

  • There is no limit to how many times you can renew

  • CPR-B is automatically included with EFA, along with AED use

✅ Standard First Aid (SFA)

  • Valid for 36 months

  • You can complete one recertification course within this period (per WSIB regulations)

  • If your SFA has expired, or if you’ve already recertified once, a full two-day course is required (per WSIB regulations)

  • SFA must be recertified through the Lifesaving Society (per WSIB regulations)

  • SFA includes CPR-C or CPR-HCP, depending on your original level, along with AED use

✅ CPR (A, B, C, HCP)

  • Valid for 24 months (some employers may require yearly recertification)

  • Your recert must match your original level (A, B, C, or HCP), or you can upgrade your level

🧠 Why Recertification Matters

  • Regulatory Compliance – WSIB and provincial guidelines require up-to-date certifications

  • Skill Refreshment – Best practices in first aid evolve, and recerts keep your knowledge current

  • Cost Savings – Recertification courses are shorter and more affordable than full courses

📌 Final Reminders

  • ✅ Check your certification’s expiry date

  • ✅ Book your recertification before it expires — if eligible

  • ✅ If EFA or CPR has expired, you can still recertify by retaking the full course

  • ❗ SFA only allows one recertification — then a full course is required
